Dr. ir. Frank Veraart Coordinator STONEM

Frank Veraart is assistant professor of history of technology and transition studies at Eindhoven University of Technology. He studies the sociotechnical changes in the Netherlands in the last two centuries. He has studied transitions in mobility, agriculture, and extraction of surface minerals.

Prof. dr. Johan Schot

Prof. dr. Johan Schot is professor of Global History and Sustainability  Transitions at the Utrecht University Centre for Global Challenges. He chairs The Second Deep Transition in the Netherlands (DTNL) project. For these studies, he combines historical approaches with transition studies methods. In STONEM, he is the promotor of Maite Van den Borre.

Dr. Bram Bouwens

Dr. Bram Bouwens is a business historian and expert in histories of globalization. He has also published on Dutch industries including Tata Steel. For STONEM, he supervises Maite Van den Borre.

Maite Van den Borre

Maite Van den Borre is PhD candidate. Her research addresses the project’s tripartite aims of investigating commodification, global supply chain development, and sustainability trade-offs. In particular, she studies ores and metals, its international impacts, and the shifting appreciation of metals as strategic resources for national economies and contemporary energy transitions policy.

Prof. dr. Erik van der Vleuten

Erik van der Vleuten is Professor of History of Technology and Chair of the History Lab at Eindhoven University of Technology since 2015. He studies the modern and contemporary history of socio-technical transitions and sustainability challenges in an infrastructured world. In STONEM, he is the promotor of Maliene Kip.

Dr. Barbara van Mierlo

Dr. Barbara van Mierlo. Is associate professor working as a sociologist at the Knowledge, Technology and Innovation Group of Wageningen University. Her expertise is in agri-food system transitions. She studies the processes of transformative, systemic change towards sustainability and their intersection with everyday social practices. She specifically focuses on the protein transition in agri-food systems. In STONEM, she is advisor and co-promotor of Maliene Kip.

Maliene Kip

Maliene Kip is PhD candidate and her research focuses on edible oils, their effect of global trade competition and the role of substitutes. Furthermore, this case allows for a more in-depth analysis of cross-system dynamics. In time, the application of edible (plant) oils extended beyond the food industries into agricultural domains (animal fodder), the production of detergents and soaps, pharmacy, personal-care products, and biofuels.

Dr. Dulce van Vliet

Dulce van Vliet is the Postdoc researcher of the STONEM project. She focuses on quantitative research methods to investigate the historical development of commodity flows and sustainability trade-offs. The goal will be to develop databases on Dutch global trade from 1900 to the present, and sustainability indicators in relation to regions of extraction and production of edible oils and metals, connected to the research of the PhD candidates.

Dr. Mila Davids

Dr. Mila Davids is an assistant professor in history of technology and business history at Eindhoven University of Technology. She has a specific interest in the developments of international knowledge networks. She published on R&D activities, knowledge exchange in multinational company networks such as Unilever and Philips.

Prof. dr. ir. Harry Lintsen (em.) †

Prof. dr. ir. Harry Lintsen (em.), emeritus professor of history of technology (1949 – 2025). He studied the history of technology in the Netherlands in the nineteenth and twentieth century. He was the project leader of the NWO project Historical Roots of the Dutch Sustainability Challenge and published on sustainability developments in the Netherlands and regional context.

Dr. ir. Rutger Hoekstra

Rutger Hoekstra is an expert on sustainability measurements systems. He co-chaired the UNECE/OECD/Eurostat Task Force which developed the Conference of European Statisticians Recommendations on Measuring Sustainable Development. He has worked with the United Nations, OECD, World Bank, European Commission, European Central Bank and other international organizations. He is also visiting is a visiting researcher at the Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML) at Leiden University.

SHT (founded 1988) is a non-profit organization promoting the scholarly and public understanding of the interaction of technology and society. SHT hosts the secretariats of the Society for the History of Technology (SHOT) and the research network Tensions of Europe. As societal partner, SHT is involved in knowledge dissemination and valorization activities in the realms of businesses and the wider public.
